AI sprite sheet generator

Turn one character into an animated sprite sheet

Start from a concept image, pick a motion, and get an 8-frame sprite sheet with the background removed and a live animated preview. Import it straight into your game.

The short answer

Summer Engine has an AI sprite sheet generator in Studio. Generate one character image (optionally guided by your own reference art), choose Walk Right, Walk Left, Jump Right, Punch Right, or describe a custom motion, and it generates an 8-frame sprite sheet on a 4 by 2 grid with a transparent background. You review it as a 12 fps animation, then import it into your Summer project or use the PNG in any engine.

Generation uses credits. A new account includes a starter amount, and thousands of free sprites are in the asset store if you just need art today.

How it works

How the sprite sheet generator works

Three steps in Studio. The character stays consistent across frames because every frame starts from the same concept image.

1. Concept image

Describe the character and pick a style (16-bit or 32-bit pixel art, hand-drawn, anime cel, flat vector, or painterly) and a view (side, three-quarter, or front). Drop, paste, or pick your own art as a reference to match it. This image defines the look for every frame.

2. Animate

Choose a template motion or pick Custom and describe it, like "casting a spell with hands raised." The generator draws 8 frames on a 4 by 2 grid and removes the background.

3. Review and import

Watch the sheet play as a 12 fps animation next to the frame grid. If it reads well, import it into your project in one click.

Motions

Animation templates

Templates keep motion consistent. Custom handles anything else you can describe; results vary more with custom prompts, so keep the move simple and readable.

Walk Right

A side-view walk cycle for platformers and side-scrollers. Mirror it in the engine or generate Walk Left separately.

Walk Left

The same cycle facing left, drawn rather than flipped, for characters with asymmetric details.

Jump Right

Crouch, take off, airborne, and land in eight frames.

Punch Right

A wind-up, strike, and recovery for brawlers and action games.

Custom

Describe the motion in plain language: an idle bob, a sword slash, a spell cast, a hurt reaction.

Export

Use the sheet in your engine

The output is a standard PNG laid out as 4 columns by 2 rows, so any engine that slices by grid can use it. Import into Summer Engine directly, or use these settings elsewhere.

For AI agents

Generate sprite sheets from your AI agent

With the Summer MCP server connected, Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and other agents can generate sprite art, remove the background, and slice sheets into separate images, even with the desktop app closed.

Generate the art

summer_generate_image with removeBackground returns an alpha PNG for sprites and icons.

Generate a pixel-art slime enemy walk cycle, 8 frames in a 4 by 2 grid, transparent background.

Slice it

summer_slice_asset_sheet detects each item on a sheet, crops it, and uploads the slices with names and bounding boxes.

Slice that sheet into separate frames and import them into the project.

Wire the animation

With a project open in Summer Engine, the agent builds the node and plays the game to check it.

Add an AnimatedSprite2D for the slime using those frames at 12 fps, then run the scene.

Honest limits

What it does not do yet

Fixed frame count

Every sheet is 8 frames on a 4 by 2 grid. Longer animations mean generating more than one sheet.

No atlas file

Output is a PNG grid, not a PNG plus JSON atlas. Slice by grid in your engine, or import into Summer where it is set up for you.

Custom moves vary

Templates are the most consistent. For custom motions, describe one clear action per sheet.

AI sprite sheet generator FAQ

What is an AI sprite sheet generator?
It is a tool that draws the frames of a character animation for you and lays them out on one image, a sprite sheet, that game engines can slice into an animation. In Summer Engine you start from one character image and pick a motion, and it generates an 8-frame sheet with the background removed.
Is the sprite sheet generator free?
Generation uses credits. A new Summer account includes a starter amount of hosted AI, and paid plans cover ongoing generation. If you only need art today, the Summer asset store has thousands of free sprites and sprite sheets.
Can I make a sprite sheet from my own character art?
Yes, as a reference. In step one, drop, paste, or pick your art from your library as a reference image, and the concept is generated to match it. The animation step then works from that concept, so every frame keeps the same look.
What animations can it generate?
Four templates, Walk Right, Walk Left, Jump Right, and Punch Right, plus Custom, where you describe any motion in plain language, such as an idle loop, a sword slash, or a spell cast.
Does it work with Godot and Unity?
Yes. The sheet is a standard PNG in a 4 by 2 grid. In Godot 4, add the frames to a SpriteFrames resource from the sprite sheet with 4 horizontal and 2 vertical. In Unity, slice it in the Sprite Editor by cell count. Summer Engine, which is compatible with Godot 4, imports it directly.
Can I generate sprite sheets with Claude or Cursor?
Yes, through the Summer MCP server. Your agent can call summer_generate_image with background removal and summer_slice_asset_sheet to cut a sheet into separate images, and with a project open it can wire the animation and run the scene.
Does it support pixel art?
Yes. Step one has 16-bit and 32-bit pixel art style presets alongside hand-drawn, anime cel, flat vector, and painterly. Every frame is animated from that concept, so the style carries through the sheet.

Animate your character. Then build the game around it.

Summer Engine is a free download for macOS and Windows, compatible with Godot 4. Import the sheet and ask the agent to wire it up.
