Port a Roblox game to Steam
A Roblox experience runs only inside the Roblox client. Reaching Steam means rebuilding your original design as a standalone game you control.
Porting a Roblox game to Steam means rebuilding your own original design as a standalone game outside Roblox, because a Roblox experience runs only inside the Roblox client and cannot be exported as a sellable executable.
Ownership is the first question, and it is not the same as in other engines. Your original scripts, models, and designs are yours. Roblox provided systems and platform supplied content are not: avatars, catalog items, Roblox supplied assets, the Roblox client, and platform services stay on the platform. Free models from the toolbox come with their own licensing uncertainty. Check the Roblox Terms of Use and your own asset list before you plan a commercial release elsewhere.
The second question is architecture. Roblox gives you networking, matchmaking, accounts, data persistence, moderation, and monetization for free. Off platform you provide those yourself or design around them. Summer Engine gives you a project you own, exports to desktop, mobile, web, and console, and takes no royalties, but it does not replace Roblox as a social platform.
What you can take with you
Take your original 3D models, textures, audio you created or licensed for any use, your level layouts, your game design, and your Luau scripts as a specification. Do not take Roblox supplied assets, avatar items, catalog content, or the Roblox rendering and physics behavior itself. Free toolbox models are risky since the original author and license are often unclear. When in doubt, replace the asset. The design is the valuable part and the design is yours.
Luau to a new language
Luau is Roblox specific Lua with Roblox APIs throughout. Instance hierarchy, RemoteEvents, Humanoid, Workspace, DataStoreService, and TweenService have no equivalent outside the platform. Rewrite the logic in GDScript or C++, keeping every tuning value: walk speed, jump power, hitbox sizes, respawn timing, drop rates. The structure of your code translates easily because Lua and GDScript are both dynamic and readable. The platform calls are what you replace.
Replacing Roblox services
DataStore becomes local save files or your own backend. Roblox accounts become Steam accounts or no accounts at all. Roblox matchmaking and servers become your own dedicated servers, peer hosted sessions, or a single player design. Roblox chat and moderation become your responsibility if you keep multiplayer. Robux and game passes become a one time Steam purchase or paid DLC. Many Roblox to Steam projects reduce scope to single player or small session multiplayer for exactly this reason.
Different audience, different expectations
Roblox reaches players through platform discovery and free entry. Steam players pay up front and expect settings menus, controller support, save files, resolution options, and a finished feel. Play sessions are longer and the tolerance for placeholder content is lower. Plan a store page, a trailer, and a wishlist campaign, since none of the Roblox discovery mechanics carry across. Steam charges a one time 100 USD app fee per title plus a revenue share.
Frequently asked questions
Can I export my Roblox place file to another engine?
No. There is no supported path that converts an .rbxl place into a standalone game elsewhere, and Summer Engine does not ingest Roblox project files. You rebuild your original design.
Do I own my Roblox game?
You own your original creations and designs, subject to the Roblox Terms of Use. Roblox supplied assets, avatar and catalog content, platform services, and the client itself are not yours to redistribute. Review the terms and your asset list before a commercial release off platform.
What replaces DataStore and Roblox servers?
Local save files or your own backend replace DataStore. Your own hosting, peer hosted sessions, or a single player redesign replaces Roblox servers. These are real engineering costs that Roblox previously absorbed for you.
Does Luau code carry over?
Only as a specification. Roblox APIs do not exist outside the platform, so the logic is rewritten in GDScript or C++ with the same values and behavior.
Should I keep the Roblox version live?
Usually yes. The platform version keeps its audience and revenue while the standalone build is developed, and the two can coexist as long as you respect the platform terms.
