Godot MCP vs Unity MCP
Godot MCP vs Unity MCP, and when to stay in Unity
Unity now has an official MCP server and at least three serious community ones. Here is what each does, what the Godot route through Summer offers instead, and how to tell which one fits your project.
The short answer
Unity's official MCP server ships in the AI Assistant package for Unity 6 and needs a trial or subscription to Unity's AI tools beta. Free community servers such as MCP for Unity (CoplayDev, MIT), Unity-MCP (IvanMurzak, Apache 2.0) and mcp-unity (CoderGamester, MIT) also connect Claude Code, Cursor and Codex to the Unity Editor. The Godot alternative is Summer Engine, a desktop engine compatible with Godot 4 whose free MCP server edits scenes, runs the game, probes runtime state, takes screenshots and generates assets. If your game, team and Asset Store purchases already live in Unity, a Unity server is usually the right answer.
People who search for a Unity MCP alternative tend to be in one of two places. Some already run a Unity MCP server and want to know whether something better exists. Others are choosing an engine for AI assisted work and are comparing the Unity route with the Godot route before they commit.
Both are fair questions, and the answer depends less on the MCP server than on the engine behind it. An MCP server is a thin layer. It can only expose what the editor lets it touch, so the useful comparison is what your agent can check for itself once it is connected. Can it run the game, send input, read the state at a given frame, and look at the result? Or does it stop at editing files and reading the console?
This page covers what the Unity servers do today, cited from their own documentation, what Summer offers on the Godot side, and a plain list of reasons to stay in Unity. Summer does not import Unity projects. Moving means rebuilding, so it only makes sense when the new engine gives you something the old one cannot.
What it does
Unity's official server
Unity MCP is part of the com.unity.ai.assistant package. It needs Unity 6 (6000.0) or later, a project connected to Unity Cloud, and a trial or subscription to Unity's AI tools, which Unity describes as an open beta. Each new client connection must be approved in Project Settings.
Free community servers
MCP for Unity by CoplayDev lists 47 tool entrypoints, supports Unity 2021.3 LTS through 6.x, and can enter, pause and stop Play mode, take camera screenshots and run tests. Unity-MCP by IvanMurzak controls Play mode, runs EditMode and PlayMode tests, captures game view and scene view screenshots and has an in-game runtime mode. mcp-unity by CoderGamester also steps Play mode one frame at a time and runs the Test Runner.
The Godot route through Summer
Summer Engine is a desktop app for macOS and Windows, compatible with Godot 4. Its MCP server, summer-engine 3.1.1, exposes 86 tools, from scene editing and GDScript to Play mode, scripted input, frame-stamped probes, screenshots and snapshot diffs.
Generation without provider keys
Summer's cloud tools generate images, sprite sheets, 3D models, motion, voice, sound effects, music and video, billed from one Summer balance. MCP for Unity v10 can also generate assets, but through your own Tripo, Meshy, fal.ai or OpenRouter keys, and that tool group is off by default.
Assets for a Unity game too
You do not have to leave Unity to use Summer's generators. 3D models come back as GLB, and the MCP can hand your agent a download link for each asset. Unity does not import glTF out of the box, so add Unity's glTFast package (com.unity.cloud.gltfast) first, and GLB files in your Assets folder then import as prefabs.
Free engine tools, open source layer
The Summer CLI, MCP server and skills are MIT open source, and engine and project tools cost nothing. Only asset generation draws on a paid plan or a top-up. Your AI client is billed by its own provider as usual.
How it works
- 1
Step 1: Decide whether you are moving at all
If the game is shipping in Unity, stay and pick a Unity server. The rest of this list is for a new project, a prototype, or a team that has already decided to leave Unity.
- 2
Step 2: If you stay, choose a Unity server by version
On Unity 6 with Unity's AI tools, try the official server. On an older LTS or without that subscription, MCP for Unity supports 2021.3 LTS onward. Check each project's README for the exact install path, since all three community servers ship fast.
- 3
Step 3: If you try the Godot route, install Summer and connect your agent
Download the free Summer desktop app, open or create a project, then run
npx -y summer-engine@latest setup claude-code --yes. Swap the agent name for Cursor, Codex or one of the other supported clients. - 4
Step 4: Rebuild one vertical slice, not the whole game
There is no Unity project importer. Rebuild the player controller and one level first, using your C# as the specification, and let the agent run the slice to prove the feel before you move content.
Two ways to run it
In Studio, or from the agent you already use
In Summer Studio
If you only want the generators, Summer Studio on the web makes images, 3D models, audio and video without the engine. Download the files and import them into Unity the usual way.
Open the 3D tab in StudioFrom Claude, Cursor or Codex via MCP
After setup your agent sees the summer_* tools. Engine tools drive the Summer desktop app, so keep it open with a project loaded. Cloud tools such as summer_generate_3d work even when the app is closed.
Example prompt for your agent
Read the Summer project context. Build a third person controller with a follow camera on a test floor, run the game, send forward and jump input, read the probe to confirm the player moved and landed, and show me a screenshot.Set up the Summer MCP

Prompts that work, and what comes back
Requests that show where an engine-level loop matters. Each one ends with the agent checking the running game rather than trusting its own edit.
Port a controller from C#
Prompt
Here is my Unity PlayerController.cs. Rebuild the same movement in a CharacterBody3D with the same speeds and jump height, then run it and compare the jump apex with the values in my script.
What you get
A new player scene and script, plus probe readings of the jump apex so you can check the numbers match the original.
Reproduce a physics bug
Prompt
The player sometimes clips through the ramp at high speed. Reproduce it with scripted input and find the cause.
What you get
The agent drives the game with input, reads frame-stamped state at the failing frame, changes the collision setup and reruns to confirm.
Generate and place a prop
Prompt
Generate a low poly supply crate, import it next to the spawn point and give it a collision shape.
What you get
A generated GLB imported into the project and placed in the open scene, with a screenshot of the result.
Assets for your Unity project
Prompt
My game is in Unity. Generate a stylized treasure chest as a 3D model and give me a download link for the GLB.
What you get
A textured GLB from the cloud generator and a link your agent can use to save it into your Unity Assets folder, where the glTFast package imports it.
Before and after
Prompt
Take a world snapshot, add fog and a sunset sky, then show me the diff and a screenshot.
What you get
A snapshot diff listing exactly what changed in the scene, plus a screenshot to check the look.
When staying in Unity is the right call
Stay if the game is already in production in Unity. A rebuild costs weeks to months, and an MCP server is not a reason to pay that bill. Stay if you depend on Asset Store tools, shaders and editor extensions, because code written against the Unity API does not run in another engine, and check the licence of every art pack before you plan to move it. Stay if your team's skills, tools and build pipeline are in Unity, or if you ship to consoles through a Unity porting partner.
In those cases the practical move is to pick the Unity server that matches your version and add Summer's cloud generators only if you want them. They produce standard files and do not care which engine imports them.
When the Godot route is worth a look
The Godot route makes sense for a new project, a prototype, or a small team that wants the agent to close the loop itself. Summer's tools are built around verification. The agent presses play, sends input, reads the state at the frame it cares about and takes a screenshot, then fixes what it finds. It also brings generation, a searchable skills library and more than 25,000 library assets into the same server.
Summer is compatible with Godot 4, so scenes, nodes and GDScript follow Godot conventions and most Godot knowledge transfers. You own the project, with no royalties and no revenue share, and desktop export for Windows and macOS covers Steam and itch.io once the export templates are installed.
How Unity concepts map if you rebuild
A GameObject with components becomes a node with children and a script. A prefab becomes a scene you instance. Update becomes a per frame process callback and FixedUpdate becomes a physics process callback. ScriptableObjects become resource files, coroutines become await or timers, and UnityEvents become signals. Your C# stays useful as the exact description of how each system behaves, even when the rebuild is in GDScript.
What Summer does not do
Summer does not open or convert Unity projects. It does not export to the web yet, and it has no console export of its own. The Summer MCP runs locally next to the engine, so it works with desktop and terminal agents such as Claude Code, Cursor and Codex, not with claude.ai in the browser. Engine tools need the Summer desktop app open.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an official Unity MCP server?
Yes. Unity MCP ships in the com.unity.ai.assistant package for Unity 6 (6000.0) or later. Unity's getting started post lists a Unity Cloud connected project and an active trial or subscription to Unity's AI tools beta as requirements.
Is Unity MCP free?
The community servers are. MCP for Unity and mcp-unity are MIT licensed and Unity-MCP is Apache 2.0. Unity's official server needs a trial or subscription to Unity's AI tools. Any AI client you connect is billed by its own provider.
What is the difference between Godot MCP and Unity MCP?
Both let an AI client call editor tools instead of copying and pasting, and the leading servers on both sides can run the game and take screenshots. The difference is the loop around that. Summer's Godot 4 compatible server adds scripted player input, frame-stamped runtime probes, snapshot diffs and built-in generation billed from one balance. Unity servers expose the Unity Editor, C# scripts and Unity's own features such as the Test Runner.
Can Summer open my Unity project?
No. Summer does not open or convert Unity projects, and C# written against the Unity API does not run in another engine. Moving means rebuilding, with your art, audio and data reused and your C# as the specification.
Can I use Summer's asset generators with a Unity game?
Yes. Generate in Studio on the web or through the MCP, then download the files. 3D models come back as GLB, which Unity imports once you add Unity's glTFast package (com.unity.cloud.gltfast).
Which AI clients work with the Summer MCP?
The setup command supports more than 30 agents, including Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex, Cursor, Devin Desktop, Cline, Kilo Code, GitHub Copilot, OpenCode, Zed and LM Studio. Any other MCP client can use the manual config.
Can I run a Unity MCP server and the Summer MCP at the same time?
Yes. MCP clients accept several servers. A common setup keeps a Unity server for the editor and adds the Summer server only for its cloud generation tools.
