GDevelop MCP

GDevelop MCP, what exists today and what an agent can do

GDevelop has its own AI agent inside the editor, and a few community MCP servers let Claude Code or Cursor work on a GDevelop project from outside. Here is what each does, where they stop, and when an engine with a full MCP server is the better fit.

The short answer

There is no official GDevelop MCP server. We found no MCP code in the 4ian/GDevelop repository, and the open GitHub request for bring your own model support in the built-in agent is still under discussion. GDevelop's own AI agent lives in the Ask AI panel and edits scenes, objects, behaviours, variables and events using GDevelop credits. Community servers such as gdevelop-mcp by gb2b (MIT, 30 tools) edit the project JSON and render previews for Claude Code or Cursor. If you want an agent that runs the game, sends input and checks the result in a native engine, Summer Engine does that, but it does not import GDevelop projects. Moving means rebuilding.

GDevelop users searching for an MCP server usually want one thing. They already pay for Claude Code, Cursor or Codex and would rather use that agent than a second AI subscription inside the editor. That is a reasonable wish, and GDevelop's issue tracker shows it. A bring your own key request for the built-in agent has been open since October 2025.

Until something official exists, you have two routes inside GDevelop. Use GDevelop's own agent, which knows the editor and every official extension, or connect a community MCP server that reads and writes the project files from outside.

This page covers both with sources, explains what the GDevelop project format means for an outside agent, and describes the alternative of building in an engine whose MCP server also plays the game and looks at it.

What it does

GDevelop's built-in agent

Open Ask AI and choose Build for me. GDevelop documents that the agent creates scenes, objects, behaviours, variables and events and installs extensions. Requests use credits. Free accounts get a weekly allowance, and higher reasoning levels need a Gold or Pro subscription.

gdevelop-mcp by gb2b

An MIT server with 30 tools and 5 prompts. It reads GDevelop's own source for its catalogue of about 1,830 actions, conditions and expressions, edits projects with dry runs, backups and undo, and captures a preview of a scene in headless Chromium.

gdevelop-mcp-server by 982945902

A smaller MIT server built for Codex. It uses GDevelop's libGD.js to create and change project data, authors events without hand-written JSON, and serves a scene preview on a local address.

What an outside agent can see

gdevelop-mcp renders a scene statically or captures a still from a real preview in headless Chromium, and gdevelop-mcp-server serves a live preview on a local address. Neither README lists a way to send input to the running game or read its state frame by frame, so testing a mechanic still means playing it yourself.

Summer as the engine-level alternative

Summer Engine is a desktop engine compatible with Godot 4. Its MCP server edits scenes and GDScript, presses play, sends scripted input, reads frame-stamped probes and takes screenshots, so the agent verifies a mechanic by playing it.

Generators that work for GDevelop too

Summer's cloud tools generate sprites, sprite sheets, backgrounds, sound effects and music without the Summer engine running. Download the files and add them to your GDevelop project as usual.

How it works

  1. 1

Step 1: Switch the project to multiple files

In the project properties, turn on saving the project as multiple files in a folder. Scenes, external layouts, external events and extensions each get their own JSON file, which makes an agent's changes small and reviewable. Put the folder in Git.

  2. 2

Step 2: Pick the agent route

Use GDevelop's Ask AI if you want the editor's own agent and credits. Use a community MCP server if you want Claude Code, Cursor or Codex. Install it from its README and point it at your project JSON.

  3. 3

Step 3: Make every edit a dry run first

gdevelop-mcp previews each change before it writes, keeps timestamped backups and can undo the last edit. Ask for a dry run, read the diff, then apply. Reopen the project in GDevelop to confirm it loads.

  4. 4

Step 4: Rebuild in Summer only if you want the full loop

If you want the agent to play and verify the game, rebuild a vertical slice in Summer. Objects become nodes, behaviours become scripts or built-in nodes, and your event sheets are the specification.

Two ways to run it

In Studio, or from the agent you already use

In Summer Studio

Summer Studio on the web generates sprites, backgrounds, sound effects, voice lines and music for any engine. Download the files and import them into GDevelop.

Open the image tab in Studio

From Claude, Cursor or Codex via MCP

You can register the Summer MCP next to a GDevelop MCP server in the same client. Summer's cloud tools such as summer_generate_image and summer_generate_audio work without the Summer desktop app, and summer_get_asset_download_url gives the agent a download link for each file.

Example prompt for your agent

Generate a coin pickup sound and a looping 30 second chiptune track with Summer, get me download links for both, and save them into the assets folder of my GDevelop project.

Examples

Prompts that work, and what comes back

What an outside agent does well with a GDevelop project, and one job that needs a different engine.

Explain a project

Prompt

Summarise every scene in my game.json, which objects each uses and which events change the score.

What you get

A structured read of the project. This is safe and fast with any server that parses the JSON.

Add a mechanic from an example

Prompt

Add a double jump to my Player object, as a dry run first.

What you get

A proposed edit with a diff you can review before anything is written.

Preview a scene

Prompt

Render the Level1 scene and show me what it looks like after the change.

What you get

A still of the scene from gdevelop-mcp's static render or its headless Chromium capture.

Generate game audio

Prompt

Make a jump sound, a hurt sound and a short victory jingle in a retro style.

What you get

Three audio files from Summer's generator, downloaded into your project's assets folder.

Test the mechanic by playing

Prompt

Run the game, jump twice at the first gap and tell me whether the player clears it.

What you get

Not listed by the GDevelop servers we read. In Summer the agent sends input, probes the player and shows a screenshot.

What the GDevelop project format means for an agent

A GDevelop project is JSON. By default it is one game.json file. In multiple files mode the scenes, external layouts, external events and extensions are split into their own files, and GDevelop recommends that mode for version control. GDevelop also warns that cloud sync tools such as Dropbox or OneDrive watching the folder can corrupt the project JSON.

Events are the hard part. In the official platformer example each condition and action is an object with a type such as `SystemInfo::HasTouchScreen` or `BuiltinExternalLayouts::CreateObjectsFromExternalLayout` and a list of positional string parameters, where text values carry their own escaped quotes. An agent editing that by hand has to get every identifier, parameter position and nesting level right, or the event loads but does not do what you meant. This is why the useful community servers validate edits against GDevelop's own sources or library instead of writing text. GDevelop also has JavaScript events, which an agent can write more reliably than raw event JSON.

When to stay in GDevelop

Stay if you like building with events, if your team is not writing code, or if you publish browser games. GDevelop exports HTML5 games, and web export is not available in Summer yet. Stay too if the built-in agent's credits suit you. It knows every official extension and edits the project from inside the editor, which avoids the file format problem altogether.

When to move a GDevelop game to an engine with a full MCP server

Move when you want the agent to test, not only edit. Summer's agent runs the game, sends input, reads the player's position at the frame it lands, takes a screenshot and fixes what it finds. You write in GDScript, with C# available in the desktop editor, and you own the project with no royalties.

Summer does not import GDevelop projects. The rebuild reuses your art, audio and level design, and your event sheets become the specification for scripts. Summer builds desktop games for Windows and macOS for Steam and itch.io.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official GDevelop MCP server?

Not that we could find. The 4ian/GDevelop repository has no MCP code, and a request to let the built-in agent use your own model or key has been open since October 2025.

Can Claude Code or Cursor edit a GDevelop project?

Yes, through a community MCP server such as gdevelop-mcp by gb2b or gdevelop-mcp-server by 982945902. They parse the project JSON and write validated changes. Commit to Git before each session.

Is GDevelop's AI agent free?

GDevelop documents a weekly free allowance for its AI. Requests use credits, higher reasoning levels need a Gold or Pro subscription, and you can buy extra credits.

Can an agent edit GDevelop events safely?

Only through a tool that understands the event format. Raw JSON edits easily produce events that load but never fire. Use a server with dry runs and undo, or GDevelop's own agent, and reopen the project to check.

Can Summer import my GDevelop project?

No. Moving from GDevelop to Summer means rebuilding, with your assets reused and your events as the specification. Summer does not export to the web yet, so stay in GDevelop for browser games.

How does GDevelop compare with Godot for AI work?

GDevelop is event based with a built-in agent. Godot 4 projects are code and scene files that terminal agents handle well, and Summer adds an MCP server that runs and checks the game. Our Godot vs GDevelop guide goes deeper.
