Factorio Style

About this template

Factorio is a factory automation game, not a traditional 4X -- but it shares the genre's DNA of expansion, exploitation, and existential threat. The core loop is hypnotic: mine iron ore, smelt it into plates, assemble plates into gears, feed gears into assemblers making inserters, use those inserters to build more assemblers. Every belt of spaghetti conveyor you lay down is a problem solved and three new problems created. Meanwhile the pollution cloud from your factory spreads outward, angering biters who evolve bigger and meaner the more you pollute. The feedback loop is the game: grow the factory to research better defenses to survive the attacks caused by growing the factory.

Summer Engine helps you build the automation systems, belt logistics, circuit network logic, and enemy evolution that make this genre compulsive. You design the resource chains, research tree, and blueprint system. The engine scaffolds inserter routing, train network pathing, and the pollution-to-attack pipeline so you can focus on the "just one more belt" feeling.

The best factory games create a state of flow where four hours feel like forty minutes. The player looks up and realizes they have built a sprawling industrial complex from nothing, with trains running on schedule and rockets launching on repeat. Design for that feeling.

Who it's for

  • Designers obsessed with Factorio, Satisfactory, or Shapez who want to build their own automation game.
  • Teams creating a factory-builder with a unique twist: underwater, in space, or with magical resources.
  • Solo devs prototyping a focused automation game with a single resource chain to test belt mechanics.
  • Studios targeting the factory-game audience with a fresh setting or simplified onboarding.

Highlights

  • Full Factory Automation Game

Mine resources, build conveyor networks, automate multi-step production chains, research upgrades, and defend against enemies attracted by industrial pollution.

  • Peaceful Automation Sandbox

Strip out combat and focus purely on logistics puzzles: belt routing, train scheduling, and throughput optimization.

  • Survival Factory Hybrid

Combine factory building with wave defense. The bigger and dirtier the factory, the harder the enemy waves. Balance growth against survival.
